I am Steven van der Hoeff. I live in a small town on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, the most southern part of the province Zuid Holland. About 18 miles (30 km) beneath Rotterdam. That is in the Netherlands, of course ;)
I have studied photography for 4 years in The Hague from 1986 until 1990. I graduated with a series of black and white photos of a monastery in Belgium. To my regret i have lost the photos somewhere, somehow….
After my study i worked for a small record company in Holland for whom i made cd-covers and a lot of portraits. You can find them here. The record company went bankrupt….
Since then i make photographs for my own pleasure in particular but also still commissioned, mainly for my employer, doing portraits and life-style-ish photography.
I started in the analog era with a Contax S2 camera (and two great Carl Zeiss lenses). My first digital camera was a Canon 400D. Nowadays i use a Nikon D700 and the SUPERB Carl Zeiss Planar 2.0/100mm zf.2.
Next on my wishlist is the Carl Zeiss 1.4/35mm with its special bokeh. The Distagon T* 1,4/35 will be available in first quarter of 2011.
Print information
Piezography K7
The images are printed with piezography (K7) inks from Inkjetmall.com. From the website: Piezography Neutral K7 is the first 100% pure-pigment, neutral ink-set offering the ultimate in quality and increased fidelity for fine art black and white printing. This pure pigment solution contains no dyes and is not designed for glossy papers. Each of the seven inks is a perfectly neutral gray, so that the user’s choice of paper can determine the “color” of the print. Pure pigment inks work best on matte papers, which offer no-compromise longevity.
Besides a neutral ink you can choose a more warm tone, or sepia (but not that ugly yellow/brown-ish sepia), or selenium or a combination of different ink hues (special edition).
Nowadays it is also possible to print on glossy papers and matte papers with the same inkset: Piezography MPS.
More info at Inkjetmall.com.
The images, as seen on this website are slightly toned in photoshop. The printed images are ordinary grayscale images but the tones in the inks are similar to the tones you see here. But it also comes to the type of paper that one uses.
I use mainly two kind of papers, both from Hahnemuhle. Photorag has a natural white surface while Bamboo has a more warmer tone. You can almost see some red in the shadows with this paper. Bamboo is also a environmentally friendly produced paper made from bamboo fibres. From the website: Bamboo represents spirituality, naturalness and resource-saving paper production. Particularly suitable for warm-toned colour and monochrome prints, Bamboo really highlights the sensuality of images.
